Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. She is the eldest child of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. When she was young the father was a carnival barker which left Ruth's mother without a choice other than to work as a cleaning lady and waitress in order to provide for the family. Ruth was born in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. Her school was closed in two short years to pursue acting. This path was fraught with problems. After landing a gig in New York as a model for a detective magazine she found it difficult to get work in the stage. Then, after a period as a hat-wearing club girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave her job. As an usherette, she worked during the early morning hours and also appeared at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first ever permanent acting job. She studied drama in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
